Tours of the Botanic Garden

Tours
It may be possible to be given a tour of the Garden by our Head Gardener. Please enquire when you book your visit. We can only accommodate a maximum of 30 children on each tour, but we can arrange some self-led activities if you are bringing more than one class. Please contact us via email: michael.hughes@durham.ac.uk telephone: 0191 334 2993 to discuss your requirements. Please note a teacher is required to be with the children for the tour.
Tours are offered to all ages, but are particularly relevant to 7-11 year old children studying plant adaptations, natural cycles, seed dispersal and so on. A tour of the garden covers most of the key points of SC2 : Life Processes and Living Things.
Areas covered
Tours usually look at the plant habitats in the greenhouse and in the garden. By looking at a range of different garden environments, we can cover wide variety of topics:
- Parts and features of plants
- Different uses for plants
- Food chains
- Climate
- Desert habitats
- Tropical habitats
- The composting cycle
- Creatures
- Life cycles
All in all, a tour of the greenhouses and an exploration of the garden is a great way to begin, or end a study of the wonderful world of plants and habitats!
