Drop off and pick up

School parties are requested to drop off and pick up at the Howlands Farm Park and Ride car park. Directions and further details about getting to this car park can be obtained from the Durham County Council website.

Arrival

On arrival, the group leader should report to the reception desk. If the visit is led by a member of our education team, the session leader will greet the group and show you to the appropriate part of the Garden. If the visit is self-led, relevant instructions and worksheets will be left for you at reception. Storage for packed lunches is available but we do not recommend leaving coats or valuables.

Supervision during your visit

The Botanic Garden is open to the public, so during your visit we ask that schools follow these guidelines:

  • Students of all ages must be supervised at all times, including during break and lunch times.
  • Primary school children must be supervised when using public toilets.
  • Although some sessions may be led by a member of the education team, please note that the overall responsibility for supervising children lies with the school teacher or representative who is in charge of the group.

Comfort breaks

In order to ensure that all students get as much out of their visit as possible we ask that any trips to the toilet take place either before the workshop begins or during one of the allotted break times. Group leaders should also be aware that toilets are only located at the Visitor Centre.

Handling guidelines

In some sessions children may be given the opportunity to handle plants, insects and other material. The session will give specific advice on handling these items but we ask that all students are reminded not to put their fingers in their mouths and that they clean their hands after a handling session.

Clothing

It is recommended that all children and adults wear sturdy shoes or boots when visiting the Garden.
