Sixth form visits
We welcome sixth form students and teachers to use the resources of our libraries. There are four libraries in the University Library service: The Bill Bryson Library, Palace Green Library, the Education Library and the Business School Library. The University Library has extensive resources including books, growing numbers of e-books and e-prints, thousands of journal titles available in print and online, and access to many specialist databases. The Library also has an extensive collection of archival and special collections material, housed in the historic setting of Palace Green Library, and two museums with collections devoted to oriental art and archaeology.
Before being able to use the Library facilities independently, all students must attend one of our research skills training sessions, which is designed to act as an introduction to conducting research and making best use of the Library. This session can take place either at the Library or in school. Teachers should contact our Learning Team, who will make all the bookings and arrangements. Since team members are often busy running visits it is preferable to contact us via email—firstname.lastname@example.org. Alternatively, you can try contacting us by phone (0191 334 5886). Please Note; we are sorry but we cannot offer induction sessions to individual students.
Once students have attended an induction they are welcome to use the Library facilities for reference during standard opening times. They will be able to consult our books and journals, and there is also limited access to many of our e-journals and databases. Please note however, that we are unable to offer access to sixth form students during the months of April, May and October due to these being the busiest months for our university students.
We also run sessions for A Level student classes wishing to explore primary source material from Palace Green Library, the Oriental Museum and the Museum of Archaeology collections. We can offer a variety of sessions exploring topics from the Reformation and the Pilgrimage of Grace, to the First World War. For more information about our sixth form visits programme, please contact us.
