Widening Participation and Raising Aspirations
We are keen to work with schools and colleges, starting at Primary School age on Widening Participation (WP) and Raising Aspirations projects. We design these projects in consultation with individual schools and staff. Please contact us to start planning ways we can help to inspire and encourage your pupils.
Through working with you over a more sustained period of time, we can play a meaningful part in:
increasing awareness of Higher Education in low participation areas and the concept of choice
raising the aspirations of young people and their families
helping to equip young people with the vocabulary of Higher Education
All of this will be done in a fun and engaging way, using the University’s collections as a springboard into the world of Higher Education.
SS Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School
Through the academic year 2018-2019, we worked closely with staff at SS Peter and Paul RC Primary School to develop a programme to support their own work in Raising Aspirations and Widening Participation.
We went into school in the Spring Term and worked with every year group, which included an assembly about university and more specifically Durham University. In the summer term, we welcomed the KS2 classes onto the campus over two separate days.
Over those two days, we held activities that included:
visiting the Bill Bryson Library
a mini lecture in one of the lecture theatres
a workshop with the Archaeology department
looking around University College in Durham Castle
seeing a student bedroom and dining hall
having their own graduation
We all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with other departments within the University and are honoured to have worked with the school on this project, which was focused on something we, as a team, are so passionate about.
