What makes a great artist?

Find out about artists such as Andy Warhol, Barbara Hepworth, Bridget Riley and the Guerrilla Girls. Create repeat patterns like Warhol and Riley, learn to express opinions like the Guerrilla Girls, sketch like Norman Cornish or sculpt like Hepworth.

History Workshops

Durham University is home to world class collections from around the globe and throughout history. Through our sessions, your pupils can learn more about the Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Vikings and much, much more.

Ancient Egypt

In this workshop, pupils will virtually explore our gallery, see real Ancient Egyptian artefacts, visit our mummy and take part in the weighing of the heart ceremony.

The Shang Dynasty

Use our collections to find out more about this ancient Chinese dynasty. Explore the bronze and jade objects made by their craftsmen and discover how they used oracle bones. Finally, learn about what happened to the last king of the Shang dynasty!

Early Islamic Civilisation

Using the collections of the Oriental Museum, pupils learn about the history of the Islamic world as expressed through art and objects. Pupils will work in one of our galleries and use what they learn to create their own piece of art in groups. They will also learn about the importance of storytelling and how Islamic mathematicians still play a vital role in our world today.

Ancient Greeks

Step back into the Ancient Greek world and explore. In this session, your class with have a go at artefact handling, take part in our Greek gallery challenges and participate in a famous Greek play: Euripides Medea.

Prehistory

Our prehistory session takes your class from the start of the Stone Age through to the end of the Iron Age in just one day. See artefacts thousands of years old, visit our gallery and find out what archaeologists can learn about people's skeletons.

Romans

The North East is home to some of the country's most important Roman sites. This session gives pupils the chance to explore our gallery, see Roman artefacts and find out about how the Romans invaded Britain.

Anglo Saxons

Learn more about the Anglo-Saxons and one of their greatest artefacts, the Lindisfarne Gospels, in this engaging session. Here you can explore our facsimilie of the book, see objects and experience what it was like to be an Anglo-Saxon monk.

Vikings

Find out more about what life was like during the Viking age. Learn more about runic writing, make your own rune stone and explore our Viking artefacts.

The Tudors

What was life like for the Tudor people in Durham City? Using documents and artefacts, discover how historians use primary sources to build up a picture of life in Tudor Durham.

The First World War

In this workshop, pupils will be introduced to the causes of the First World War and experience what it was like to be a soldier by using our specially created handling collection. They will also create some poetry inspired by famous war poets and a pioneering, but strange, anti-war art movement.

Local History

Embark on a study of your school's local area and discover its fascinating history. What stories lie behind local landmarks? Piece together the puzzles of the past with maps, objects, documents and photographs. Every session is tailored to your school!

Religious Education Workshops

Gain a better understanding of major world faiths by visiting our exhibitions and booking a session with us. These are half day sessions, but you would be able to combine two of these to make a full day at the museum or outreach visit to school.

Hinduism

Learn more about the Hindu faith in this session. Pupils will virtually explore our gallery, take part in a retelling of the Ramayana, create their own diva lamp and see our Hindu handling collection.

Sikhism

Find out more about Sikhism in this session that focuses on how people worship and what is important to Sikhs. Pupils will explore our galleries, handle some museum artefacts, create a piece of artwork and learn how to tie a turban.

Buddhism

Who was Buddha? Why is he a special person to Buddhists? This session uses objects in our gallery to answer these questions and encourage children to discover how Buddhists worship. Pupils will also get the chance to handle objects, create Buddhist prayer flags and learn more about the life of Buddha.

World Cultures Workshops

Our collections stretch from Egypt, through to the Middle East, India, Nepal, Korea, China, Japan and Europe. If you want your pupils to have a greater understanding of the world, please book one of our online sessions.

Discover just some of the traditions associated with Lunar New Year, celebrated by millions around the world! Take part in a retelling of traditional stories that explain why and how Lunar New Year is celebrated. Explore our galleries, learn about symbols within our collections and create your own artwork.

China

The Oriental Museum is home to an incredible collection of Chinese artefacts. This session explores this fascinating country and gives pupils the opportunity to create their own Tangrams, see museum artefacts, explore our gallery and meet our dragon.

Japan

Using our collections and Japanese gallery, explore the culture of Japan's history. In this session, pupils will explore our Japanese gallery, have the opportunity to investigate objects from Japan and try their hand at Japanese art.

Widening Participation and Raising Aspirations

We are keen to work with schools and colleges, starting at Primary School age on Widening Participation and Raising Aspirations projects. We design these projects in consultation with individual schools and staff.
