Durham University’s Museums and Attractions welcome students undertaking the Arts Award. We offer a wide range of opportunities to help young people achieve the award – get in touch to get involved! Here are some of the ways we can help:
We are actively recruiting young people to join our young people's group and help us reinterpret our collections, put on exhibitions and events and advise on our collections management policy.
Visiting our Galleries
Young people have the opportunity to visit our galleries at the Oriental Museum and Palace Green Library to see exhibitions on a range of subjects and art forms. Special events such as artist-led workshops, lectures or seminars are also held which are open to young people.
Leadership and Apprenticeship Opportunities
Young people wanting to take on leadership roles might want to help us with our programme to redevelop our galleries and workshops. This will involve assigning roles, liaising with museum professionals and artists, and co-ordinating the activity of young people in the team. All projects undertaken will form part of the core museum offer.
Volunteering and Work Experience Placement Opportunities
Short work placements or volunteering opportunities are available at certain points throughout the year.
Meeting Arts Professionals
Volunteering offers you the opportunity to talk to artists or specialists in different fields. During your time with us it is also possible to talk to our museum curators, collections managers and technicians about their roles.
Showcasing your Work
Schools and other groups may have the opportunity exhibit their work in our temporary or online exhibition galleries.
Durham University’s Resources
We are able to offer access to Durham University Library for the purposes of research for projects. We can also liaise with Durham University student groups who may be able to work with young people carrying out an Arts Award.
