Work Experience

Post-16 Work Experience Programme

Durham University Library and Collections offer two opportunities for work experience across the academic year. We invite applications from post-16 (sixth form and college students) who are interested in learning more about the heritage sector and working with our Curatorial Team, Archives and Special Collections Team, Conservation Team, Visitor Services Team and the Learning and Engagement Team.

Our work experience programmes are based at our visitor attraction venues; the Oriental Museum, Museum of Archaeology, Palace Green Library and Durham Castle.

The aim of the work experience is to offer an insight into the careers and opportunities available within the heritage sector, while giving you the chance to contribute to the delivery and development of our services. You will need to complete an online application form in order to join one of our work experience programmes (see below).

There are two work experience offers available:

  • Online: Three day online work experience focussing upon curatorial work, archives, conservation, learning and engagement activities with collections. Open to post-16 pupils across the UK.
  • On-site: Five day on-site work experience focussing upon curatorial work, archives, conservation, visitor services, learning and engagement activities with collections. Open to post-16 pupils local to Durham University. Successful applicants must be able to travel to Durham University for each of the five days.

For more information, please contact the Learning and Engagement Team at 4schools@durham.ac.uk. Please note, we do not accept applications via email, only by the online application form.

What did last year's participants think of their experience?

“I enjoyed listening to each member as they had a lot of interesting things to talk to us about and finally the friendly personalities, they all showed us, it made it fun and made us not shy to ask questions."

“. . . I also really enjoyed the Q+A opportunities and getting to know how the professionals came into their current jobs, especially the visitor services people who had fascinating stories about their arrival into Durham Archives."

“The highlight for me was finding out about the career of Archiving as that was the most interesting to me and the one, I would consider pursuing a career in."

"It showed the diversity of ways you can apply your own personal skills to a career in history.”

“The whole week generally opened up lots more careers in history than I knew were possible.”
