Excellent Masters courses and PhD supervision
We offer two excellent Masters courses in ‘Defence, Development and Diplomacy’, and in ‘Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding”. Our teaching is interactive, policy-relevant, inter-disciplinary and innovative. Through simulations, invited experts, collaborations with practitioners, and fieldtrips we aim to deliver a classroom experience that is different from the norm. Our alumni are distributed across the world, many in key decision-making appointments.
We also offer PhD supervision in issues related to peace, conflict, development and security.
All courses are designed to maximise inter-participant interaction. The MScs explore the interface between defence, development and diplomacy in conflict contexts. They explore the causes and effects of violence, and approaches towards conflict prevention, stabilisation and post-conflict reconstruction. Straddling war and peace studies, and drawing on (international) politics, law, geography and anthropology, among others, the programmes enable students to engage with theories, to discuss with academics and practitioners and to gain practical skills. Both courses use a broad range of teaching methods, among them, lectures, seminars, role plays, simulations and round tables.
Cross-cutting themes include the changing relationship between state, society and the international system; the role of law, ethics, culture and communication; the interplay between the local and the transnational; and the relationship between different approaches towards security. The MScs are targeted at professionals from governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations, graduates and those wishing to pursue further research.
During a conflict, would you know what urgent actions need to be tackled? Here, the Durham Global Security Institute, based within the School of Government and International Affairs, gives students the opportunity to put their learning into action during their Capstone Humanitarian Intervention Simulation.
