About Us

The interdisciplinary character of DGSi is reflected in its management structure. DGSi is hosted by the School of Government and International Affairs (SGIA) and managed in close cooperation with the Anthropology Department and Law School. Beyond its core disciplinesDGSi cooperates with academics from a broad range of disciplines, among them history, sociology, urban studies, and geography. It also brings together and promotes exchange between researchers and practitioners working with both governmental and nongovernmental institutions.

We offer two Masters courses – the MSc in Defence, Development and Diplomacy, and the MSc in Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding. Both are taught in very interactive ways with a lot of contact with the practitioner world. Teaching involves Continuing Professional Development courses led by outside experts, a capstone simulation exercise, fieldtrips, and input from scholars and practitioners with first-hand experience of the conflict issues and areas.

  • MSc Defence, Development and Diplomacy

The MSc is designed for practitioners and students looking to enhance their skills in the context of broader theoretical models, as well as graduates with a career in government, the armed forces, inter-governmental organisations, NGOs or academia in mind.

Our scholars have a strong track record of working with policy and practitioner communities, including international organisations, government departments and agencies, NGOs and others in UK and beyond. Their fieldwork research informs their teaching, and allows them to contribute to ongoing policy and academic debates on peace, conflict, and security.

DGSi offers a range of research opportunities leading to a Doctorate. It also offers a range of short Professional Development Courses aimed at assisting people involved in diplomatic, development and military operations in these complex conflict environments.

We are collaborative in our approach to teaching, research and outreach. If the DGSi mission and approach strikes a chord with you, then please do get in touch.
