Volunteer with us

Palace Green Library was home to the original University Library and still holds the University's extensive special collections of manuscripts, archive materials and rare books. We have just come to the end of a major refurbishment programme which has led to the establishment of the Barker Research Library, Holland Conservation Studio, the restoration of Bishop Cosin's Library and the development of exhibition spaces. As part of this exciting transformation we are seeking volunteers who love working with people and have a passion for history to join the team.

We need volunteers to help us with welcoming visitors and assisting them in the galleries and in Bishop Cosin's Library, supporting our family activity programme and helping with tours of Durham Castle.

Volunteers also have the opportunity to work with our archives and special collections on projects designed to increase access. At the moment we have volunteers working on a project to detail alterations to Church of England properties and on a project to collate information about members of the University who served in the First World War.

If you are interested in joining us as a volunteer, please contact our Visitor Services Co-ordinator.
