There are priority areas for which we are actively seeking long-term support, though these are not limiting and of course supporters are at liberty to tailor the focus of their gift to appropriately reflect their particular interest.

Our current priority areas are

  • Collections conservation
  • Improving collections storage
  • Funds for acquisitions of contemporary material

Unrestricted gifts are also most welcome as the flexibility they afford enables the Museum to use the gift where it is of most value. This could be an area of need which, unless you update your will very regularly, might not have been conceived when you considered your options and decided to make provision for a gift to the Oriental Museum. The legacy gift with the deepest impact is broadly designated or free of restrictions.

We would always encourage you to contact us and share your wishes with us to ensure you are appropriately thanked and the Museum understands your gift. Please contact Head of University Museums, Dr Craig Barclay, to discuss your wishes.

We cannot give advice on what to put in your will – for that we strongly recommend you contact a lawyer who will be able to explain whether there are any tax benefits of donating that might be relevant to you.

Please note that Durham University has an Exempt Charity Registration Number, X6507, which your lawyer should also be made aware of when considering a donation or gift. The University Offices have also moved to new premises and the registered address of the University is: Durham University, Palatine Centre, Stockton Road, Durham, DH1 3LE. When considering a gift to the Oriental Museum specifically, please state this clearly in your will.

Thank you for considering a gift to the Oriental Museum in your will.
