Volunteer with us
The Oriental Museum was opened in 1960 and is the only museum in the North of England devoted entirely to the art and archaeology of the great cultures of Northern Africa and Asia. We welcome over 20,000 visitors each year and run a varied engagement programme from family activities to lectures to craft workshops. Volunteers contribute to the work of the Museum in many different ways, from engaging with visitors in the galleries, to supporting the work of the Museum’s curatorial, collections management and learning teams.
We are looking for volunteers who have a passion for the collections in our care and who love working with people. There are openings for volunteers who want to work with us to deliver our learning and engagement programme by helping with school visits and running family activities or by supporting our front of house team inthe galleries. We are also occasionally able to offer placements with the curatorial team, for example, helping with research, cataloguing and packing objects. These volunteering opportunities are highly specialised, are very popular and are in high demand so please be aware that we cannot accept every volunteer. We do, however, seek to ensure that each volunteer has the best possible experience in their placement.
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please contact please our Front of House and Volunteer Co-ordinator.
