My doctoral thesis is a systematic analysis of legal records from the equity courts of Duchy Chamber and Star Chamber during the reign of Elizabeth I. In examining the rhetorical construction of these texts it demonstrates not only a deep engagement with humanist rhetoric by those within the legal profession, but also a systematic engagement in political theory and political practice on the part of the litigants. In doing this it attempts to bridge the gap between social and intellectual history, while engaging with a wide array of questions concerning authority, deference, social cohesion and politics in early modern England.
My postdoctoral research interests are concerned with historical method.
