Resources

Durham has unique research resources in particular areas:

  • Medieval British and European history
  • Early Modern English history
  • The history of north-eastern Africa, especially Sudan
  • East Asian history
  • Modern British and Global history

The University Library, with its Archives and Special Collections, and the Durham Cathedral Library and Archives also have historical resources of international significance. These include the medieval to modern archives of Durham Cathedral and the Durham Palatinate, medieval and early-modern book collections, modern manuscripts, the Sudan Archive, and extensive microfilm and online sources. Neighbouring record offices and libraries contain even further rich historical collections.

The video below is an introduction to the History of the Sudan Archives here at Durham. The Archive is made up of more than 400 separate collections of individuals, businesses and organisations. In 2005 the Sudan Archive was granted Designated status by the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council, identifying the collection as one of pre-eminent national and international importance.
