The Department of History received its Athena SWAN Bronze Award in 2018. The Athena SWAN Charter encourages and recognizes commitments to advancing gender equality in academia. The Departments’ Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team, comprising members of academic and professional support staff as well as students at all levels, continues to identify areas for positive action and promote good practice in supporting women’s progression at every stage of study and throughout their careers.

As a Department, we are committed to fostering an inclusive culture. We have made particular advances in improving the gender balance of academic staff: more than 40% of our permanent academic staff are women, rising to 50% at professorial level. By April 2023, we aim to have made measurable progress in further improving gender equality and inclusivity, with the goal of achieving an Athena SWAN Silver Award.
