Volunteer with us
The Museum of Archaeology was situated in the Old Fulling Mill for many years but in July 2014 moved its display to a new home in Palace Green Library. The gallery now focuses on the history of Durham in the past 10,000 years and has a deliberate family-friendly focus. To support the work of the curatorial team we are looking for volunteers who have a real passion for archaeology.
Volunteering at the Museum of Archaeology provides a unique opportunity to work with a historical collection to make it more accesible to all. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks such as helping to research, document and catalogue the collections, ensuring that the objects are stored and packed appropriately and that they are kept in a clean condition through housekeeping routines. These volunteering opportunities are highly specialised, are very popular and are in high demand so please be aware that we cannot accept every volunteer. We do, however, seek to ensure that each volunteer has the best possible experience in their placement.
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please contact our Visitors Services Co-ordinator.
