On the Threshold
The first of a two part exhibition bringing the work of London-based Japanese artists to the North East.
Works by nine artists will be displayed in a number of spaces within Durham University’s Oriental Museum and the adjoining Lafcadio Hearn Cultural Centre, part of Teikyo University of Japan in Durham. In this way the artists seek to juxtapose Japanese traditional aesthetics and Western experience, both in the selection of the artworks themselves and in the choice of location for their display.
Many of the artists contributing are currently students at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and so this represents a rare opportunity to see work by emerging, young Japanese artists who have never before displayed their work in the North East.
The second part of the exhibition, exploring the work of some of these artists in greater depth, will take place in the Oriental Museum between 29th January and 19th May 2016.
