Funding award for new Silk Road Gallery
(30 January 2019)
The Oriental Museum has been awarded £50,000 by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Wolfson Foundation towards the development of our new Silk Road Gallery.
This major new project will transform the ground floor of the Oriental Museum. The new introductory gallery will bring together objects from across our collections to tell stories trade, travel and exchange across the continent of Asia and into Europe, all the way to Durham.
Silk, ceramics and spices have travelled these trade routes for many centuries. At the same time people have exchanged knowledge, learned about other faiths and been influenced by new artistic styles.
The new gallery will feature visitor favourites such as our magnificent Chinese bed alongside objects never seen before. Chinese jades, Islamic metalwork, and Russian folk art will be among the treasures that will feature in exciting cross-cultural displays.
The new gallery will open in early 2020.
The Oriental Museum is undergoing a major redisplay. Regular Updates are sent to our Friends to keep them up to date on progress. You can download these here.
