New tour highlights the 'hidden women' at the Oriental Museum
(5 March 2018)
On Thursday, 8 March, the Oriental Museum launches a new tour around the galleries, highlighting the ‘hidden women’ in the museum’s collections.
8th March is International Women's Day and 2018 also marks one hundred years since the first women gained the right to vote in the United Kingdom. Numerous events and exhibitions are taking place across the country to commemorate this momentous moment in British history. The Oriental Museum is celebrating this anniversary by highlighting some of the often overlooked women from around the world represented in the displays.
Assistant Curator, Gill Ramsay, said: ‘As you follow our ‘Hidden Women’ trail, you will encounter artists and collectors, queens, scholars, warriors, politicians and scientists. These stories span the whole of North Africa and Asia, and highlight the lives of women who lived thousands of years ago, as well as women who are alive today. We hope the stories of these amazing lives will inspire our visitors’.
The self-guided tour includes just over 50 objects spread throughout the permanent galleries. Some were already on display but have been reinterpreted, others have never been displayed before. All of these objects have stories to tell about the women who are portrayed on them or who made, used or collected them before they came to the museum.
All of the objects featured in the tour will be on display until Friday, 21 December 2018. Visitors can pick up a guide at the museum front desk.
