School visits

School parties are very welcome at the Oriental Museum. We offer a wide range of workshops for children from EYFS to KS 5 and beyond. Each workshop makes extensive use of our fantastic collections and is designed to encourage children and young people to engage with objects and artefacts from different cultures. Some of our most popular sessions are listed below but we are more than happy to work with teachers to provide a bespoke session - just get in touch!

  • Life and Death in Ancient Egypt
  • Marvels of China
  • Chinese New Year
  • Shang Dynasty
  • Japanese Art and Culture
  • Early Islamic Civilization
  • Signs and Symbolism
  • Religions of India
  • Comparative World Religions
  • Art from different cultures
  • Inspiring Literacy

The vast majority of our sessions are led by a member of the Learning Team although groups wanting to have a self-led visit are also welcomed. Free pre-visits for teachers are available and members of the Learning Team are happy to discuss any aspect of a prospective visit.

The museum is fully accessible, including toilet facilities, and has a café and shop. A picnic area is available in summer or when the weather is fine. Otherwise, packed lunches may be eaten in the comfort of the classroom.

Costs for school visits are £4 per child, teachers /helpers are free. Free Hazard Identification sheets are available to assist you in writing your Risk Assessments.
