DUL MS Cosin V.IV.5 Statuta Angliae temp. Ed. III s. xiv2

These incomplete draft descriptions of medieval manuscripts in Durham University Library are copyright, and may not be quoted without the permission of the University of Durham Library.

Owing to inconsistencies with the source software, accented characters appear in varying compound forms. This has not yet been rationalized.

8/3/90 AJP revision of AID 2/3/89

The manuscript comprises four sections (A-D). The last, a single leaf, s. xiv1 is older than the rest. (B) forms a supplement to (A), but (C) duplicates one item in (A), see 1(p) and 3(b).

6 (s. xvii) + 83 + 5 (s. xvii); foliated c. 1951. Membrane (0.14 mm., variable; stiffer for (A); some quires (3, 9-10) with hairside outermost, quire 6 with fleshside outermost; some flaws), 185 x 130 mm. approx., all three edges cropped (see turned-in corners, ff. 54, 59 and 71).

Catchword on quire 7. Quires lettered, s. xiv ex., on first recto at centre of lower margin: 1-6, a-f (quire 1 on f. 2, and so probably after loss of first three leaves and with f. 1 turned back to wrap around ff. 3-5); 7-10, a-d.

No evidence of pricking. Written space c. 165 x 95 mm.; framed in sharp dark grey, often not easy to see. 35-36 or, (C), 33-35, except ff. 78-80v, 28-32; the first above top frame-line in (B) and (C).

Written in anglicana of documentary type, or, for headings and 'Item' anglicana formata, proficiently, by at least four hands: I, (A) and (B); II, ff. 60-77v and 81-82v; III, ff. 78-80v; IV, f. 83, more set.
