Copyright Licensing

NLA Educational License

The Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA) Educational License.

Durham University holds a license with the NLA which permits the photocopying and scanning of limited portions from newspapers. This license is designed to give access to newspapers for purely educational purposes, whilst also being fully complaint with copyright law.

The NLA License allows for copying from UK national and regional newspapers.  It also permits limited copying from  certain specialist and some foreign titles.  From January 2010 this also includes some newspaper websites.

Subject to certain forms and conditions, the license permits:

Digital copying
The inclusion of newspaper content in study literature
The projection of content by illumination onto a screen

Copying can be undertaken on an occasional or frequent basis in both paper and digital formats, where elected.

Digital copying includes scanning, emailing, hosting on a secure intranet site and the receipt and distribution of newspaper content received from a public relations agency or a licensed media monitoring agency.
