Established in 1905 and located in Kuala Lumpur, Universiti Malaya is the oldest and highest ranking Malaysian University.

Dates

The academic year consists of two normal semesters and a special semester. Each semester is divided into two blocks by a 1-week mid-semester break.

  • Semester 1: October to February
  • Semester 2: March to July
  • Special Semester: July to September

Application dates to Universiti Malaya:

  • Semester 1: 1st March - 30th April
  • Semester 2: 1st September - 31st October

Academic Requirements/Restrictions

Students must have a CGPA of 3.0/4.0 or above.

Modules from the Faculty of Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy are not available to exchange students.

Language Requirements

Students must have good English proficiency in speaking and writing.

An English Language Proficiency Certificate equivalent to CEFR level B2 is required for students who are planning to study courses from the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) and the Faculty of Law (FOL).

Language of instruction:

  • Science-based: 90% of courses taught in English
  • Social science-based: 80% of courses taught in English, 20% in Malay Language or other foreign language*

*Academy of Malay Studies, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (except English subject), Academy of Islamic Studies.

Accommodation

On-Campus Residential College (without meal):

  • Approx. MYR 2500 (around £430) per semester
  • Twin-sharing bedroom
  • Furnished with beds, wardrobes, study tables, chairs and bookshelves
  • Fan
  • Common bathroom and toilet
  • WiFi

Off-Campus Private Residential:

The costs differ between types of room and residence which can range between MYR 1500/month to MYR 3300/month.

  1.  Recent passport size photo

  5.  Recommendation letter issued by home university
    • Confirmation of enrolment status at home university
    • Recommendation to participate in mobility programme at UM
    • Scholarship/sponsorship details (if applicable)

Student Support

Additional Information

There is an administration fee of MYR 630 (approx. £100) per semester for all exchange students. Students are required to make payment upon arrival at UM. There is no application fee incurred during the application.

Health requirements:

  • It is compulsory for students to purchase the local insurance coverage policy from the EGMS's appointed panel for the endorsement of student pass
  • Post-arrival medical screening
