Why consider a Global Opportunity?

Travelling and experiencing life in another country can be a very rewarding experience. A Global Opportunity can boost your studies and give you that extra edge once you have graduated and are thinking of going onto further study or looking for employment.

While some students may wish to work or study abroad for a full year, we understand that some students may not want or be able to spend an entire year abroad. For this reason we have a range of short placements available during summer periods such as summer schoolsglobal internships and international volunteering opportunities. Similarly, many opportunities have financial support from Student Loans, earning a wage on a placement year, scholarships or external funding. The funding page provides more information on the support available.

Why GO

1) See (more of) the world 2) Experience a different style of education/work 3) Learn about another culture 4) Learn another language (or just some new words!) 5) Enhance your career opportunities 6) Discover undiscovered talents 7) Make lifelong friends

Funding

Funding is available for many of our global opportunities. Many year-long placements allow students to continue to receive Student Finance / The Durham Grant for the year and there is a tuition fee reduction for Placement and Study Abroad years. Additional financial support may also be available for students that may have entry barriers, such as caring responsibilities, medical support costs or from Widening Participation backgrounds.

Educational & Disability Support

Each year we support students who require additional support to successfully undertake a global opportunity. We recognise that students have a range of needs from dyslexia to physical impairment and a range of responsibilities, such as caring, and work together with both Durham's support services and those of our partners to facilitate placements.

Languages

You don't have to speak a foreign language to undertake a global opportunity. Many of our study, work or volunteering partners offer placements in English. However, for students that would like to learn a language alongside their degree and for students where knowledge of a foreign language is a pre-requisite, support is available.

Shorter Opportunities

We offer shorter opportunities for students who may not want to or be able to spend a full year abroad. These include internships, volunteering and summer schools ranging from a few weeks to a few months in length. Depending on your circumstances you may be eligible to apply for funding support.
