Durham Global Week
We live in an interconnected world, which is rapidly changing and faces global challenges such as climate change, urbanisation, and migration, affecting how the world works. Brexit, Covid and new technologies have added to these challenges for the Higher Education sector.
Celebrating Global Culture and Impact
Durham Global Week created a focal point through which to recognise, celebrate and learn from our cultural diversity and the impact of staff and students across the world.
Establishing Durham Global Week
Through the inaugural Durham Global Week, our aims of recognising, celebrating and learning from Durham’s role as a global university have been reached.
This year's Durham Global Week:
- Celebrated and recognised the contribution of our international students and staff to the culture and life of the University and the wider region. The diversity of our student and staff bodies creates enormous opportunities, not just within Durham Global Week, but on an ongoing basis, for increased understanding and respect for other cultures both within the University and in the wider communities within which we are based.
- Highlighted the importance of global citizenship / awareness for our home students and provided them with a broader perspective on the world we live in. It is more important than ever for our students to understand the wider world and their place within it to help them to thrive, reach their full potential, and learn how they can play their part in finding solutions to some of the global challenges we face.
- Recognised and learned from the contribution made by the University in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, working together with partner universities, governments, alumni and other key stakeholders across the world.
"I am delighted that, through Durham Global Week, we can recognise the contribution of our international staff and students, celebrate some of the amazing work that is going on and learn from each other in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding."
