Responsibilities of TEI Board of Examiners

In summary, the TEI Board of Examiners is responsible for the following; TEIs must consult the corresponding guidance page for more detail:

  • the form, content and approval of assessments (see our guidance on assessment design); 
  • receiving and confirming the anonymised marks for any and all modules under its jurisdiction (see our guidance on double marking and moderation); 
  • where the programmes under the board’s authority include modules under the jurisdiction of another board of examiners, receiving the confirmed marks for these modules (once those marks have been confirmed by the other board of examiners) (see our page on modules at other TEIs); 
  • making arrangements for the resubmission of unsatisfactory work and the consideration of any resubmitted assessments (see our guidance on resits); 
  • considering and determining, in accordance with the relevant University core regulations and programme regulations, the progression of all students registered on the programme(s) for which the board is responsible (see our guidance on progression); 
  • considering and determining, in accordance with the relevant University core regulations and programme regulations, the recommendation of an award for students registered on the programme(s) for which the board is responsible (see our guidance on recommending awards); 
  • taking into account in its decisions on student progression, any claims of serious adverse circumstances (SACs) submitted by students under consideration by the board of examiners (see our guidance on SACs); 
  • considering reports on any irregularities in assessment processes, relating to either potential academic malpractice or the conduct of the assessment process (see our guidance on academic misconduct); 
  • considering and ratifying the approval of application of Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) (see our guidance on APL).

TEI Boards of Examinermust ensure that the following is submitted to Durham in line with the deadlines in published guidance and the Common Awards Calendar: 

  • confirmed module marks for all students registered on Common Awards programmes (see our guidance on submitting module marks) within 48 hours;  
  • Moodle marksheets for students recommended to the Overarching Board of Examiners with 48 hours; 
  • minutes of TEI Boards of Examiners within 2 weeks of the date of the meeting;  
  • approved APL credits (see our guidance on APL);  
  • outcomes of the scrutiny of SACs applications (see our guidance on SACs);  
  • assessment irregularity reports (see our guidance on academic misconduct).
