We have a very wide variety of clubs and societies for both undergraduate and Postgraduate students alike that are almost all exclusively student-led and organised.
Our strengths lie in many areas but particularly in sport, drama, charity work and music, our provisions for which are excellent. All members of College are encouraged to participate since all levels of achievement can be accommodated.

At Hild-Bede, because we have such a large and diverse student body, we offer a huge variety of societies and interest groups for you to get involved in.Our music and theatre groups include our Chapel Choir and 'Hild Bede Theatre', which gives you the chance to perform or get involved behind the scenes in a large-scale musical in our very own on-site theatre, or in one of their smaller-scale performances.Lots of interests are represented in our societies:
And if we currently don't have a club which caters for you, then you can actually start your own! All you need is 15 like-minded people to start a club, have it ratified and apply for a budget. The College gives you all the support you need to make it happen. Our most recent additions include the 'Poker Society' and the 'Fashion Show Committee'.All our clubs and societies are 100% run by Hild Bede students, giving everyone the chance to be a President or Treasurer or Social Secretary, and make the Club the best it can be (and boost your CV too!).
There is the chance to get involved in volunteering projects, outreach work and fundraising through the our own ‘Communities and Liberations’ Committee, Durham University Charity Kommittee (DUCK) group, and through the University's Student Community Action (SCA) group. Hild Bede students are involved with a vast range of charity and outreach activities: From completing the 3/5 Peaks and expeditions to Nepal, right through to rag-raids raising money out on the street, and working in local schools. Our students help with St. Johns Ambulance's activities, organise bar quizzes to raise money for charities and run a charity fashion show.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) of Hild-Bede is similar to the Junior Common Room (JCR) of other Colleges except that constitutionally it represents both undergraduates and postgraduates whereas a JCR traditionally is for undergraduates.
A number of college-organised events punctuate the academic year that give students, staff and others an opportunity to participate together in events that reflect the long-established traditions of the College. From bar quizzes to formal dinners, charity fundraising nights to our beer festival, theatre productions to film nights... our Entertainment Committees make sure we never have a boring week. Our social calendar is FILLED with both regular and one-off events. The highlights of the year are undeniably our Winter and Summer balls. The Ball Committee spend days turning the college into a stunning, themed venue. Past themes have included 'the Wizard of Oz', the Circus, and 'New York, New York'. We attract incredible acts to these events; we've had Tinie Tempah and Wheatus in past years. And if you want to be involved with creating these fabulous events and choosing who plays at our Balls, then you can join the Ball or Entertainment Committees!
