College Life

Hild Bede buzzes with energy, opportunities to participate, to contribute, to learn, lead, and to have fun. There is something on every day, from meetings of our 40 clubs and societies, to sports and theatre, arts, music and entertainment.

You can relax in your room, one of our study spaces, our reading rooms, or reach the City centre and train/bus station easily if you're looking for a night out in Durham or further afield.

Life at Hild Bede

Hild Bede students are uniquely represented not by a Common Room for Undergraduate and another for Postgraduate Students but by the Student Representative Council.

Hild Bede also boasts a Senior Common Room comprising around 200 members. They are friends and supporters of College drawn from the University, local community and beyond.

Student Representative Council

Our SRC is led by an elected President and Executive Committee which represents, supports and serves the entire College community. It is the SRC that organises the many events and entertainment that pattern our year and also contributes to our College management.

The SCR runs seminar series and also supports students directly through their sponsorship of the ‘Principal’s Fund’ to which all SRC members may apply for support with endeavours and activities which contribute to their development and hence College life.

Student Support and Wellbeing

We pride ourselves on keeping you safe and well, happy and healthy, and feeling positive. Fundamental to this is the emphasis that we place on providing excellent student support.

We have a specialist Student Support Officer, Elaine Franklin who works closely with our Vice-Principal and Senior Tutor, Laura Todd, to whom you can turn for help and advice both around your studies and other matters which concern you. We are very experienced in helping people with everything from the difficulties that arise with moving to a new City and community, to sign-posting and support for counselling, psychological as well as physical ill-health and wellbeing.

College Events

Hild Bede has the oldest and one of the largest College Days in Durham, as well as two Balls, in the Winter and Summer, and around 6 ‘formals’ a year in which our Principal extends a cordial invite to College to join them at dinner organised by the SRC.
