Course Summary

The Durham MBA is designed to help you transform into a world-class business leader. By choosing to study an MBA at Durham you will have the opportunity to develop your strategic, analytical and critical thinking by applying theoretical concepts to global business situations, as well as enhance your capabilities for leading and managing people.

Personalise your pathway

Our MBA programme includes a combination of core modules and specialist pathways, giving you the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and capabilities and specialise in specific areas that are most suited to your own professional needs.

Entrepreneurship Pathway

The Entrepreneurship pathway is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and capability of management and corporate entrepreneurship, including the ability to create your own new business venture. You will also have the opportunity to attend master classes run by industry experts, as well as receive one to one mentoring from experts in the industry.

Consultancy Pathway

This pathway will enable you to build your consultancy capability by critically examining the complexities of managing projects in a business context including planning, monitoring, quality control and closure. You will explore the intricacies of leadership, culture, change and motivation of project teams. You will also have the opportunity to work within a company where you can put your knowledge and theory into practice.

Technology Pathway

As the role of technology continues to increase in importance to the world of business, this pathway will enhance your in-depth knowledge of business-analytics techniques and give you a critical insight into technology innovation. On this pathway you will increase your range of skills to interpret results and the relevance of them for your company. You will also develop the ability to choose appropriate techniques to apply to challenges and fully understand the role of technology as a game changer in terms of creating new products or markets.

Programme Structure

You will study the following core modules

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Economics for Global Business
  • Leading and Managing People
  • Marketing
  • Operations and Technology
  • Strategic Management
  • The Boardroom Exercise
  • Sustainability, Ethics and Change
  • Strategic Business Project
  • International Business in Context.

Pathway-specific modules:

  • Management Consultancy
  • Project Management

  • Entrepreneurship Management and Corporate Entrepreneurship
  • New Venture Creation

  • Technology Innovaton
  • Business Analytics.

International Business in Context

As part of your MBA programme you will visit an international business overseas. In addition to attending language classes throughout the year, you will visit leading international companies where you will test and examine academic business approaches in global companies and gain an appreciation of the complex nature of the different dimensions of business. This will help you to appreciate the challenges of global business and also give you the opportunity to apply your new language skills into practice.

Strategic Business Project

Throughout your study, you will source, research and then produce a detailed report on a business project you have undertaken at an organisation of your choice. This consultancy exercise will give you the opportunity to analyse and evaluate tangible business issues and apply the knowledge you have acquired in the classroom.

The Boardroom Exercise

Each pathway also benefits from the Boardroom activity, which is one of the most challenging but rewarding aspects of our MBA. The module is a real-life simulation of a boardroom and will give you the opportunity to apply the concepts and theories learnt during the core modules to a real board-level management team in an international organisation. This will allow you to enhance your analytical, critical thinking and strategic management skills and will also give you the opportunity to network with a number of different business professionals to develop key business relationships.

Business Development or Internship

When you study via the 15-month route, you then have the choice to either explore a new industry/role, or accelerate your career through an internship or concentrate on business development for setting up your own business.

Learning and Teaching

Course Learning and Teaching

The full-time MBA Programme is delivered through a mixture of sessions including lectures, case studies, individual and group presentations. Some sessions are delivered by guest speakers who are practitioners in the field.

Students study 7 core modules, and select 5 elective modules which enables them to undertake more in-depth study of particular topics. This is followed by a 15,000 word dissertation or Business Project to allow students to carry out independent research and develop their skills in analysis and scholarly expression, using an appropriate theoretical framework. They are supported in writing their dissertation through the study of research methods, and attending individual meetings with an allocated supervisor, who monitors their progress and provides advice. Where students choose to complete a Business Project rather than a Dissertation, this can be self-sourced or arranged by Durham Business School. The Business Project allows an opportunity to put new skills into practice in the real world, working on a live project with a regional, national or international company.

Students will typically attend 20 hours per week of core teaching in Term 1. In Terms 2 and 3 students would, on average (and dependent on elective choices), attend 12.5 hours per week of core and elective teaching. In addition, students have the following opportunities:

(1) A Boardroom Simulation Activity in Term 2, integrating academic learning from core modules into a live boardroom situation (compulsory)

(2) An International Study Week at an overseas location in Term 2, giving students the opportunity to learn about the business, economy and culture of another country, gain an ‘insider perspective’ on international businesses and network with key business staff.

(3) A Charity Consultancy Project in Term 3

Our MBA “Leading Edge Programme” incorporates skills development, career management and the Durham Speaker Series and runs throughout the academic year. Students have the opportunity of unrestricted individual meetings with a Career Consultant throughout the year and during induction they attend a three-day Personal and Team Development residential activity and additional workshops over three days. In Term 1, students can attend 19 hours of various workshops; 29 hours in Term 2 and 21 hours in Term 3 to enhance their interpersonal skills and career management. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the London City tour, the monthly Durham Speaker Series events and the Annual Durham Convention.

Outside of timetabled contact hours, students are expected to undertake their own independent study in preparation for teaching sessions, assignments and other forms of assessment including exams, and general background reading to broaden their subject knowledge. All members of teaching staff are also available to provide additional support on a one-to-one basis via weekly consultation hours.

Sebastian Bahr

A Business Project at one of Germany’s largest car dealerships - Gottfried Schultz - brought my MBA studies to a conclusion.

The project followed the Business School’s concept of combining theory and practice, which we had already appreciated during the studies in Durham. In this context, it gave me the opportunity to apply a mix of newly gained knowledge and previous work experience in a complex academic research project at a client’s site.

With a strong customer-driven focus it was my primary objective to develop a holistic and sustainable solution for a certain issue, considering my limited resources in terms of time, budget and company specific insight.

In close cooperation with the client I got the possibility to draw recommendations based on the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. I was delighted to hear that the results of my work built the basis for a meeting with 70 managers.

This project was a once in a lifetime chance to undertake a realistic consultancy project with all its advantages and benefits but without experiencing the full stranglehold of a client-consultant relationship.

Sandeep Narayan

My internship experience with Cuppa Concorde was invaluable, but looking back all the inspiring lectures, workshops and other coursework we did worked as practice sessions for facing real life business scenarios. I never imagined that I would be able to provide consultations just nine months after I started my MBA programme.

My internship began with a couple of meetings with the CEO and brand managers who were impressed with my application for an internship and my idea of exploring what I have studied. I was briefed about Cuppa Coffee House, their business philosophy and was asked to do a study of their intended Customer categories and also research over the aspects that needed to be considered for initiating and maintaining a profitable expansion. To carry out the study I engaged customers and many theories with a unique qualitative technique-narrative analysis to acquire data and analyse them. They were pleased with my report and felt my study would be valuable in informing future strategy.
