Making Music at Durham
There are so many opportunities to engage with and enjoy all kinds of music whether you're based in Durham City or at Queen's Campus, Stockton. Durham University boasts a year-round musical programme, catering for every taste. Many concerts and performances are organised and performed by students.
As you might expect, the sheer wealth of musical talent at the University means there is something for everyone - from Chamber Choir to Light Opera, Big Band to Orchestra, Rock and even a DJing Society to join. Many of our colleges have their own choirs, bands, orchestras and music societies too, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and have a go, whatever your taste in music!
Music Durham is the umbrella society for Durham University’s main ensembles, coordinating the activities of the student-run and student led music socieites. Music Durham works closely with student singers and musicians to deliver some of the many concerts, shows and socials, while also providing the professional Masterclass Series for Music Durham members.
Durham University Light Opera Group
DULOG is the largest musical theatre society in the university, and one of the largest drama groups. They aim to produce professional quality musical theatre and light opera within Durham University and allow as many people as possible to participate, in order to provide experience and nurture talent. The society has been around for over 50 years, originally producing only light opera (hence the name), but now putting on a range of musicals of various styles, culminating in their annual show in Durham city's professional venue Gala Durham every year.
Durham University Orchestral Society (DUOS), is comprised of Durham University Symphony Orchestra and Durham University Chamber Orchestra. DUOS prides itself on being entirely student run, and covers a large array of demanding orchestral repertoire throughout the academic year. DUOS is also the longest running music society in Durham celebrating it's 50th anniversary in 2015. Members of the society are a part of a friendly community of talented musicians and have the opportunity to receive coaching from members of the BBC Symphony and Northern Sinfonia Orchestras.
Durham University Big Band
The Big Band plays with a traditional 20 piece set up, but allows musicians to play together in smaller groups. The Big Band are in demand to play at events and veunes across the country, in 2014 they played the opening gig of the Manchester Jazz Festival at Matt and Phreds Jazz Club. Previous members of the band have gone on to study music at top London colleges, some making their career in the music industry.
Durham Univesrity Brass Band
DUBBS is vibrant society is committed to showing the university the meaning of banding! Based in the music department, they rehearse weekly and put on regular concerts, perform for a variety of events and also participate in a national brass band competition. Except for certain positions, the band is non auditioning, promoting the ethos of inclusion and welcoming players of all abilities. They play a wide variety of music from traditional brass band marches and Proms style classics, to 90s hits, much their music is written and arranged by their own players.
The Durham University Choral Society
Affectionately known as DUCS, this is one of Durham University's largest and oldest musical groups, having performed continuously at a high standard for nearly seventy years. The society is very friendly and welcoming to new members who soon feel right at home singing with them each Monday! Every year, members perform in a variety of concerts at iconic venues such as Durham Cathedral, with quality accompaniment from fellow Durham student musicians (for example the Durham University Orchestral Society). the society is proud of its range of talent.

Underpinning our musical excellence is the Department of Music, one of the leading centres for the study of music in Britain. The Department runs Musicon, the University's public concert series. Musicon organises 12 public concerts per year across various venues by internationally acclaimed artists in the fields of classical music, jazz, musical theatre, world music and contemporary music.
