Volunteering at Durham

Here at Durham University we actively encourage and support our staff and students to volunteer across our local community. Working with a wide range of community partners, our volunteering programme directly responds to local community needs, aligning volunteer projects and opportunities to help enhance our partners work.

Covering a range of themes; Education, Environment, Sport and Physical Activity, Culture and Social Inclusion, there is an opportunity available to suit every interest.

Student Volunteering

Thousands of Durham students are volunteering in the wider community. Student-led, community-focused projects offer you the chance to learn new skills and to make a positive impact.

Students can choose to volunteer through college projects, department initiatives, societies, Team Durham Community and Durham University Student Volunteering and Outreach (DUSVO). DUSVO boasts between 20 - 30 student-led community projects, supporting numerous initiatives and partners across our 5 key themes.

It is easy to volunteer; whether you are looking for a 'one off' event or a project, all opportunities can be found online and all relevant training is provided. In return for giving your time, you will get to learn new skills, meet new people and make new friends whilst supporting the wider community.

Volunteer Zambia

And if you're interested in working with a community further afield, you might want to take the opportunity to get involved in the Volunteer Zambia project.

Durham University is an integral partner in the Volunteer Zambia project, an international sport programme run by the Wallace Group – a collaboration between leading UK ‘sport’ universities. The project primarily supports and works with the leading Zambian sports NGO, Sport in Action. There are a number of volunteer roles available across several sports and other development areas.
