World Rankings

Durham is one of the world’s leading universities as shown by our world top 100 position in the QS World University Rankings 2021, where we are ranked 86th.

A record 19 Durham subjects are also in the world top 100 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020, including 11 in the world top 50 and three in the world top ten.

Formed in August 2018, the department is building on the excellence in academic education and research on sport and exercise that has developed at Durham for more than 20 years. Our academic team brings together psychologists, physiologists, nutritionists, sociologists and political scientists, enabling the Department to be at the forefront of developing multi- and interdisciplinary approaches to studying and researching prominent issues across sport and exercise.

Leading Undergraduate Programmes

Our undergraduate programmes reflect the multi-disciplinary strengths of the department. From 2019, we will offer a new BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences alongside our existing BA (Hons) Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity, which has consistently been ranked as one of the best sport-related degrees in the country.

Both courses offer students flexibility and choice from a diverse and constantly developing array of modules. Throughout their time in Durham, our students also have fantastic opportunities to be heavily involved in the university's outstanding high performance, college and community sport programmes.

Excellence in Research

The on-going development of our undergraduate curriculum reflects the growing diversity of research expertise among the academic staff who work closely with local, national and international organisations to inform policy and practice in terms of sport and community development, athlete training and welfare, health promotion, and addressing issues of inequality in these domains.
We have a substantial and growing cohort of postgraduate students undertaking sport-related research, a number of whom benefit from scholarships from the ESRC, AHRC and other funding agencies.
