Services and Collaboration

We proudly support our students, staff and local community, to provide a well-rounded, enriching experience. For example, equality, diversity and inclusion are formally embedded in departmental governance and everyday practices. This includes providing flexible working for staff. There is targeted support for Early Career and Postdoctoral Researchers. Staff have dedicated time for research and annually receive funding to develop research. There is high quality support for grant application development within the department and across the university via the Research and Innovation Service (RIS). We also have a full-time Department Manager and a Senior Research Administrator, plus designated support from a centralised finance hub. All staff are mentored and develop Personal Research Plans for developmental purposes. Research Leave is also an integral part of our research support system. Each member of staff and postgraduate research student also is welcomed in a research theme, benefitting from annual seminars, intellectual stimulation, workshops, and engagement from different disciplines and international visiting scholars.

Staff and students have access to a wide range of development and training opportunities. This includes grant application and writing masterclasses, peer review of grants and journals papers, leadership training, and shadowing opportunities. Staff and students are supported to engage in fellowships and secondments. There are also opportunities for studying abroad.

We are part of the North East and Northern Ireland Doctoral Training Partnership (NINEDTP), funded by the ESRC. Our research and teaching laboratories, supported by a dedicated technician, includes a new suite of research facilities built as part of a c.£30M investment into Durham’s Sport and Wellbeing Centre. In the Centre we have a Human Performance Laboratory (200m²) and a Phlebotomy Laboratory (15m²).

Staff and students have access to numerous Durham Research Institutes and Centres to enable broad interdisciplinary knowledge, collaboration, sharing of ideas, and develop innovative pathways to impact. For example, we have strong links and representation with The Durham Research Methods Centre, The Centre for Translational Research in Public Health (FUSE), and Durham Institute of Medical Humanities. We are part of the N8 Research Partnership, a collaboration of the eight most research-intensive universities in the North of England. We are also part of the The Matariki Network, an international group of 9 research and impact-intensive universities that share resources to develop international research and promote global social responsibility.
