Excellence in research, teaching and employability of our students

The Durham University Department of Sport and Exercises leads research to help reduce inequalities, promote social justice and ensure better health and wellbeing within and through sport, exercise and physical activity. Our work makes an impact by challenging existing inequalities in sport, making physical activities more inclusive, and improving health and well-being through socially conscious research.
We work with, not on, members of the public. Our research involves working closely with different communities, groups and individuals, for example: young people; female football fans; black and minority ethnic groups; disabled people; elite athletes; and people with brain injuries or chronic illnesses. This ensures our work is founded on real-world issues, allowing us to identify research priorities and understand how best to communicate outcomes to ensure our findings can have the biggest impact, regionally, nationally and globally.

Our Strategic Vision

We engage in meaningful and impactful research with external funders and partners including:

  • Arts and Humanities Research Council
  • Economic and Social Research Council
  • Leverhulme Trust, Kick it Out
  • The Football Association
  • and The Commonwealth Secretariat.

All of our researchers supervise postgraduate students and teach on our undergraduate programme, ensuring we are developing the next generation of world-leading researchers in sport and exercise sciences.
