National Evaluation: myplace (2009-2011)

A research project of the Department of Sociology.

Background

A targeted scheme of youth centre development aimed to encourage young people to participate in positive activities was introduced in 2008. Twenty one 'fast track' projects whose funding was announced in March 2008 and forty 'standard track' projects, with funding announced in November 2008 are aiming to develop modern 'world class' facilities under the government's ten year strategy for young people, Aiming High'.

Working in partnership with YMCA George Williams College, durham University is undertaking the evaluation of this scheme.

Funding

The project is funded by the following grant.

  • Myplace Evaluation (£74647.88 from Big Lottery Fund via Hall Aitkin Consultancy)

Aims

  • To assess the progress and development of the scheme identifying in particular areas of 'leading practice' and any issues which arise to hinder progress.
  • To contribute towards the development of tools for self-evaluation within the projects.

Methods

Eight case studies were undertaken in projects using distinctive models of practice.

This was supplemented by annual surveys of all projects.

Young People was involved in evaluation in 2010-2011.
