Policing Anti-Social Behaviour in Cleveland
A research project of the Department of Sociology.
The research was commissioned in response to concerns raised by the police inspectorate about the disparity between rates of ASB in Cleveland and elsewhere.
The aim of the project is to examine reports of ASB in relation to possible explanations for Cleveland’s anomalous position: differences in underlying ASB rates; police recording practices; police responses; reporting patterns.
Methods will include detailed quantitative analysis of police records in Cleveland and available national data; file analysis; and interviews with key individuals in the police and amongst stakeholders.
Initial findings indicate a slightly higher rate of underlying ASB in Cleveland and a persistent disparity in recording of incidents – which needs further exploration
