Promoting organisational citizenship and collegiality: The utility of an online, value-centred training programme for leadership assessment and development
A research project of the Department of Sociology.
The LFHE’s strategic plan launched in 2011 recognises that a combination of sector reform and increased competition has created pressure for leaders to balance these demands against core purposes and values of HE. The current project addresses a clearly identified sector need – cost and time-effective workforce development. Crucially, the proposed training platform focuses on developing transformational behaviours with practical outcomes (e.g., organisational citizenship, employee satisfaction, reduced absenteeism, performance etc.; Palanski & Yammarino, 2009; Podakoff et al., 1990) and are evidenced as effective particularly during times of organisational or cultural change.
Online screening methods were used to assess implicit transformational leadership values (e.g., empowerment of others, integrity, consideration). A self-assessment and delivery platform was be developed for the HE sector, with pilot data examined to identify whether value awareness training has potential to enhance value endorsement and subsequent transformational leadership.
