Forensic DNA Databasing: A European Perspective

A research project of the Department of Sociology.

Building on current work by the applicants on police uses of the UK National DNA Database, this study will chart the differing legislative and operational contexts for forensic DNA databasing throughout the EU.

The research will: explore the scientific, technical, legislative and social contexts of the current growth of forensic DNA databasing in support of criminal investigation in the states of the European Union; consider the nature and implications of increased trans-national DNA data sharing and genetic information exchange in support of criminal investigations across the EU; investiage emerging trends in current forensic DNA databasing practice; and discuss the main legal, social and ethical issues arising from these developments.
