Smart Materials & Middlesbrough College

Partnering with Engineering lecturer Kimberley York from Middlesbrough College, Science Outreach’s Dr Lorraine Coghill worked with the College’s Engineering students on a practical project based around smart materials.

Aiming to enrich the students’ experiences and increase their awareness of different resources, the project allowed students to experiment with and investigate a range of smart materials, looking at examples of their use in existing products. Throughout their course their ideas developed, incorporating the new materials into their product development and the eventual manufacture of prototypes. The students showcased their projects at celebration events.

This project was part of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Motorola/RAEng Visiting Teaching Fellow Scheme 2012.
