The Durham Quantum Light and Matter (QLM) research section encompasses several research groups sharing a common interest in the study of the quantum properties of atoms, molecules and solids and their interactions with light. Our work aims to advance our fundamental understanding of quantum light and matter, whilst exploring a broad range of applications in quantum science, metrology and quantum technologies.
Our research covers experimental and theoretical topics broadly arranged into the following themes:
- Bose-Einstein condensation and Fermi-degenerate gases
- Cold and ultracold molecules
- Quantum computation and simulation
- Quantum optics
- Quantum technologies
- Rydberg systems
- Spectroscopy of thermal vapours
The QLM group is a key partner in the Joint Quantum Centre (JQC) Durham-Newcastle. Founded in 2012, the JQC is broadly dedicated to the research of various aspects of quantum science and technology. The centre is composed of members from the departments of Physics and Chemistry at Durham University and the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University, leading to a rich and stimulating research environment.
