Student opportunities festival

10:50am to 5:00pm, Online

Join us over the week of June 29th - July 5th for the Student Opportunities Festival, hosted in collaboration with Organised Fun, Student Volunteering Network, National Student Fundraising Association, Student Publication Association, National Student Television Association and the Student Radio Association.

This week-long (free!) online event will consist of talks, workshops, and panel discussions which will provide an interactive environment where you can hear from sector specialists, charities, and other student leaders from across the UK.

We have an amazing line up of speakers who bring expertise, experience and great ideas. Each session will be giving insights and perspectives about the different parts of student opportunities.

Some sessions will focus on a specific area, like student media, fundraising, societies or volunteering, whilst others are general. There’s plenty of careers advice and inspiration, too!

There is something for everyone, whether you’re a student volunteer, a leader of a student group, society or club, a sabbatical officer, part-time officer, or staff professional.

Join the chat using #StudentOppsFest on all social media channels.

Student Art Prize

9:10am to 11:00pm, Online

The Student Art Prize was launched in October 2019 to expand opportunities around creativity and to develop a new permanent student art collection, housed within the university’s wider art collection, but available as a resource for the whole community. Although Durham does not formally teach fine art, almost every university college has its own active art society or art group, where students take part in workshops, meet artists and develop their artistic skills through collaborative creativity.

In light of the current lockdown, the once-planned physical exhibition of these artworks now takes a digital format. Each artwork is displayed here alongside the artists own words.

Bronze Arts Award

A showcase of artwork created by 12-17 year olds exploring the arts. Summer in the City and the Oriental Museum’s Arts Award programme is supporting 28 young people from The Girls’ Network to achieve their Bronze award, inspired by the collections at Durham University’s Oriental Museum and the three strands of SitC; art, music and theatre and its overarching theme of ‘home’.

Pushing Paper: Contemporary drawing from 1970 to now has gone online!

9:00am to 5:00pm, Online

The physical exhibition at the Oriental Museum may currently be closed, but we have created some DIY activities, alongside a virtual tour and exhibition films to watch online or download for later. Using these materials and films you can find out more about the artworks and get inspired to create your own.

Then all you need to do is:

  • Take a photo or video of it
  • Email it to SummerintheCity.durham@gmail.com
  • Be sure to include your social media details (if you want to be tagged)
  • We will post on our Instagram

The deadline is FRIDAY 17 JULY AT MIDNIGHT. Winners will be announced and contacted after this.
