Durham's Louis Allen and the History of a Battle

25th February 2020, 17:45 to 19:00, Durham Gala Theatre

Speaker: Professor Tarak Barkawi (Professor of International Relations at London School of Economics and Political Science)
Often written and consumed by veterans, military history is too close to its own subject matter. In his seminal history of the Burma campaign in which he served, Louis Allen sought clarity through exacting reflexivity and the archives of his former enemies. Between the first and second editions of his Burma: The Longest War 1941-45, he became embroiled in a dispute with veterans of the Battle of Sangshak. The story of this dispute guides us through some of the ways in which history is a continuation of war by other means.

Tickets are free but booking is recommended; please contact the Gala Theatre on 03000 266 600 or visit www.galadurham.co.uk. Please note a small number of tickets will be available at the venue on the night of the event.
