Civic Trust win for the Teaching and Learning Centre
(19 March 2021)
Our Teaching and Learning Centre has been recognised as a Highly Commended Winner at the Civic Trust Awards 2021.
The building, which opened in 2019, has received praise for its design which incorporates a dynamic roof profile with multiple facades, creating a visually interesting building which is in keeping with its surroundings. The judges commented particularly on the way that the top floor has created spaces reminiscent of a traditional reading room, and on the beautiful views from the teaching spaces through the tree tops.
The £40million Teaching and Learning Centre hosts a wide range of learning environments and technologies including lecture theatres, teaching rooms, an education laboratory where new teaching and training methods are being developed, student learning zones and catering facilities. The new building is enabling Durham to continue to provide education that is challenging, enabling, research-led and transformative and that takes advantage of the latest digital technologies.
The Centre will also host major academic conferences which will support the wider economic impact the University makes to Durham City, County and North East England. For information about conferencing opportunities, please see here.
The building is a wonderful addition to the University’s estate and provides a vital resource for students and staff alike. This award is testament to the commitment the University has shown to developing its estate and facilities. Durham is a great place to study and this really demonstrates our commitment to inspiring the extraordinary.
