Wallace and Gromit producer funds exciting new theatre scholarship

(25 January 2021)

Durham alumnus David Sproxton, co-founder of the Academy Award-winning Aardman Animations, the studios behind Wallace and Gromit, is sponsporing a brand new Scholarship to help a students with a passion for the technical aspects of theatre.

Inspiring the extraordinary
The ‘Durham Inspired Stagecraft Scholarship’ is open to all prospective students applying to come to Durham this year and will provide support worth up to £16,000 over four years.

The Scholarship offers any prospective student who has exceptional potential in stagecraft, the opportunity to get involved in every aspect of theatre production, joining the community of theatre-makers at Durham Student Theatre. It will allow them to develop a wide range of skills involving lighting, sound, projection, stage management, set and costume design and video production.

The student scholar will be provided thorough technical training, to industry standard, to give them all the critical skills needed to be a valuable and trusted technician.

Scholarship opportunities
This scholarship forms part of the Durham Inspired scholarship programme, a major scholarships programme to enable students from low-income backgrounds in North East England to study here at Durham.

A hub of creative talent
We are proud to have one of the most exciting student theatre scenes in the country, with over 30 theatre companies producing over 100 shows a year and our very own venue, the recently refurbished Assembly Rooms Theatre.

David says he developed his passion for cinematography in Assembly Rooms:

“So, when you see one of your favourite Aardman films, on a big or a small screen, tip a wink to the Assembly Rooms Theatre, it’s had more influence on the studio’s work than you might ever have thought.”

The deadline for applications is Sunday 28 February.
