As the new academic year begins, we’re excited to introduce two new College facilities!

Making Mount Oswald home

This summer, we completed our Mount Oswald development – home to John Snow College and our all-new South College.

These Colleges have among the best accommodation and facilities on offer at Durham.

Plus both have fantastic student leaders and support staff, so students can be sure of a great experience.

About the Colleges…

Each College at Mount Oswald has about 500 beds, plus its own common room and café bar.

Both are self-catering. There are two types of accommodation: en-suite bedrooms in cluster flats, each with its own kitchen and dining area, and town houses with shared bathrooms and kitchen and dining rooms.

Introducing South College…

South is our new, 17th College. Sixty Pioneer Scholars have transferred to South from other Colleges to help develop its student life and culture.

Richard Freeman, South’s Junior Common Room (JCR) President, said: “South College is fantastically exciting – students are at the heart of every Durham College and build the community and spirit. Our students are at the forefront of South College, and they will have the unique opportunity to create traditions, sports teams, society groups and so much more.

“My hope is South College offers something for everyone and to put students in charge of their own student experience. I am excited to support and see what our students create!”

More about Mount Oswald…

The Mount Oswald site also has a Hub building, including a large events hall with capacity to seat 300 people, gym, music practice rooms, a launderette, faith/quiet room, yoga/dance studio and performance practice space. Plus, there’s a multi-use games area.

It’s close to existing Colleges and Departments and a short distance from our Bill Bryson Library and Teaching and Learning Centre.

It’s also close to edge of Durham and beautiful countryside, plus has good public transport links to the city centre.
