Queen’s translator to offer teaching to students
(29 November 2019)
Dr Kevin Lin OBE will bring his expertise as the UK’s top Chinese-English interpreter to his role of Professor of Practice here at Durham.
Dr Lin is the interpreter to the Queen and has also been the UK Government’s lead interpreter since the 1990s, translating for five successive Prime Ministers. On top of this, he runs a successful business, training and supplying interpreters for both public and private organisations.
Newly appointed to the role of Professor in Practice at Durham, Dr Lin will now also be working with students in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures to deliver teaching and to provide them with professional development opportunities.
Connecting students with industry
Through two days of teaching at Durham, Dr Lin will bring his real-life experience as an eminent cross-language communicator and successful business owner to students who are looking ahead to potential careers in translation and interpreting.
MA students in Translation Studies will be given the opportunity to observe professional interpreters at work through Dr Lin’s network.
Students will also be given the opportunity to visit Dr Lin’s company - KL Communications - which has the largest team of full-time Chinese interpreters in the UK. This will give them valuable insights into the business of professional interpreting.
Appointment of Professors in Practice
Dr Lin’s appointment is part of a University-wide scheme to recruit individuals who have enjoyed significant success in business or public office into the roles of ‘Professors in Practice’.
Having pursued a career outside of academia, these highly successful individuals will bring a practical and challenging perspective on a wide range of academic topics and allow students to learn from real-world experience. Their contributions will enhance the curriculum and help further develop links between the University and business, opening professional development opportunities for students.
Dr Lin’s appointment was celebrated at an event on 28 November in front of staff and students.
