Bright future for John Snow College, as 2019/20 location is announced

(14 December 2018)

Rushford Court

A great new home for John Snow College for 2019/20 has been announced.

The College, which relocated from Queen’s Campus to Howlands in summer 2018, will be based at Rushford Court for one year.

This is before moving to purpose-built new facilities at Mount Oswald for 2020/21 and onwards.

Sustainable location

Rushford Court is on North Road, Durham, DH1 4RY. It is located in the Viaduct area, which is close to Durham railway and bus stations, the city centre, and a short walk to other Colleges and academic and professional service Departments.

It has been developed by Unite Students and is currently operating privately, separate from the University, following its opening in September 2018. The University takes up a one-year lease for the academic year 2019/20.

As the home for John Snow College, Rushford Court will comprise 358 bedrooms, including 280 in cluster flats and 78 in studios. All are en-suite. It will also include a gym, games room, cinema room, laundry facilities, Junior Common Room (JCR) space and bicycle storage.

‘Full Durham Collegiate experience’

Owen Adams, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Colleges and Student Experience), said: “As part of our ten-year University Strategy, we are increasing the number of our students that live in Collegiate accommodation, and we are very pleased to announce Rushford Court as John Snow College’s temporary new home for 2019/20.

“Rushford Court will offer the full Durham Collegiate experience, combining opportunities for intellectual and personal development with pastoral and welfare support in a thriving, mixed community.

“I am sure the location, close to Durham railway and bus stations, the city centre, other Colleges, and departments will also be attractive.

“We are committed to working with our neighbours and partners in Durham, and hope that having a College in this central location will bring benefits for both the University and City.”
