Diversity shines through student art

(15 July 2020)

Hands Of Acceptance, by Alice Stubbings

The diversity that we love at Durham University is at the heart of a fantastic new online exhibition by some of our top student artists.

The Student Art Prize

Last October, we launched our Student Art Prize: hoping to celebrate the wonderfully talented student artists we have here at Durham, and give them further opportunities to have their work displayed and enjoyed.

We are proud to be an inclusive, international community, where everyone can feel comfortable to be themselves and to flourish. So as a theme for the Prize we chose ‘diversity’.

How did the competition go?

We were delighted that over 75 student artists entered the competition, and we were inspired by the quality and range of their work.

A judging panel selected a shortlist of 21 and the winner was Alice Stubbings, a Law undergraduate at St Mary’s College, for her piece ‘Hands Of Acceptance’.

Alice wins £1,500 and her work will be added to our extensive art collections.

We had planned to exhibit some of the entries at the University but, due to Covid-19, we are running an online exhibition instead – so you can enjoy the artworks wherever you are in the world.

Art at Durham

Although we don’t teach art at Durham, almost all of our Colleges have their own art groups or societies, where students take part in workshops, meet artists and develop their skills through collaborative creativity.

We have extensive art collections and these inform our teaching and research, as well as being on show around the University for us all to enjoy.

On winning the Student Art Prize, Anna said: “I am so grateful and shocked to have won. The subject of diversity is something I feel strongly about, and I am so appreciative to have been able to show this in my artwork.”
