The Lemonade Principle – A Durham MBA Podcast Available to all

(5 May 2020)

“When the world gives you lemons, use them to make lemonade!”

If you read the Wiki entry the origins of this proverbial phrase are a little shaky but the important thing here is the meaning. The phrase is used to encourage optimism and a positive can-do attitude in the face of challenges or adversity, and it can be a very apt phrase when considering business and in particular entrepreneurial activity.

This is why Chris Roberts, Engagement Manager with the School’s International, Engagement and Careers team decided to call his podcast for MBA students The Lemonade Principle. Chris’ role supports MBA candidates by opening them up to different career opportunities through contact with guest speakers at workshops and presentations, alongside direct recruitment support available for businesses around the world. Before the current COVID-19 crisis, Chris had already decided to produce the podcast as an additional way for MBA candidates to gain insight, get inspired and access the wisdom of the students that went before them.

Chris said: “In addition to the wide range of events we organise for MBA students I wanted to offer them something that was in a format accessible to them at any time. MBA candidates are busy people and as a podcast fan myself I felt this was an ideal way to offer career insights and inspirational speakers in a way that fits around them.”

The first podcast was an interview with Hong Kong based Dr Larry Lee, alumnus from both the Durham MBA and DBA programmes. Larry chatted to Chris about his experience on the programmes and how what he has learned has helped him as CEO of his company Avanti Media.

To date, four episodes have been released and have received over 300 plays in 17 countries around the world. The latest interview with Mike Burkly, Chief of International Security Programs at USAID in Washington DC, was released today (27 April).

These podcasts are available to anyone with an interest in business, entrepreneurship or study at Durham.
