This Girl Can

(10 December 2019)

We have over 300 female-only sports teams at Durham and our female participation rates in sports are the highest in the UK, but we want to encourage even more of our students, staff and members of the public to get active and participate in sport.

That's why we're getting behind #ThisGirlCan with a week dedicated to celebrating our fabulous female athletes and encouraging our students to get active and improve their wellbeing.

Team Durham

This week, through Team Durham, we are offering free exercise classes for female participants at our new fitness centre in Maiden Castle. Team Durham is also profiling some familiar faces and offering up a few surprises on social media.

This Girl Can

This Girl Can is funded by The National Lottery, and the campaign aims to encourage women and girls to get active in a way that's right for them. If it gets your heart rate up, it counts.

This Girl Can was created as a response to Sport England's Active People Survey. The survey reported that two million fewer women than men participate in sport and that 75% of women aged 14 - 40 said that they would like to exercise more.
